Joy Hagen

Joy Hageno

Joy Hagen creates assembled landscapes using reclaimed wood and encaustic medium. Hagen's work largely references trees as she uses products such as melted bees wax and reclaimed wood to enhance her paintings. Hagen methodically employs these products in her paintings to express the complexities of emotions that may arrise from interacting with natural, such as taking a walk in the woods.

Hagen expresses, “Having grown up in Seattle, the daughter of a forester, I can’t help but love the forests and woodlands of the Pacific Northwest with their moody and deep colors and subtle interplay of light and shadow. I am also intrigued by the way pattern and color can speak so specifically to a region or a people.”

Joy Hagen regularly exhibits at Studio 103 in the Tashiro Kaplan Building.
